About Harmattan

African Capital Markets Intelligence — Published from Canada.

Harmattan exists because Africa’s capital markets have long deserved better than what the world gives them, better coverage, better analysis, better access, and better tools for the investors, institutions, and governments that operate within them.

My name is Bestman Eleanya. I was born and raised in Nigeria, where I began my professional life in the banking sector. Over six years I rose to Operations Manager at a bank branch, watching firsthand how capital moved, where it got stuck, and what it meant for ordinary Nigerians when financial systems worked or failed. That experience never left me.

When I relocated to Canada for further studies, I carried that lens with me. I’ve since worked across banking, mortgage lending, business analysis, and financial consulting, picking up an MBA, a Graduate Certificate in Human Resources Management, and progressing through CPA Canada’s professional qualification program along the way. I’ve spent over a decade sitting at the intersection of African financial intuition and Western analytical frameworks. Harmattan is what happens when those two worlds finally meet on the page.

I have family in Nigeria. I have investments in Nigeria. I watch the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX), the FMDQ Securities Exchange, and African capital markets the way others watch sports, with genuine personal stakes and the kind of attention that only comes from being deeply connected to what’s happening on the ground.

What I could never find was a publication that covered these markets the way Bloomberg covers Wall Street or the way the Financial Times covers London. Rigorous. Independent. Accessible to the sophisticated investor without being impenetrable to the curious newcomer. Built for the diaspora professional in Toronto or Calgary or New York or London who wants to invest back home intelligently, and equally built for the fund manager in Lagos, the government official in Abuja, and the institutional investor in New York who is just beginning to understand what Africa’s capital markets are becoming.

That gap is why Harmattan exists.

What We Cover

Harmattan publishes independent research, analysis, and market intelligence across:

  • The Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) — equities, fixed income, ETFs, and market structure

  • FMDQ Securities Exchange — Nigeria’s debt and FX market

  • African private markets — venture capital, private equity, and the emerging listed private market infrastructure being built across the continent

  • Macro forces — CBN monetary policy, inflation, FX, fiscal policy, and the broader economic environment shaping Nigerian and African investment

  • New market infrastructure — including the next generation of exchanges and capital market platforms emerging across Sub-Saharan Africa

Who Reads Harmattan

Harmattan is written for anyone with a stake in Africa’s financial future, diaspora Nigerians building wealth across borders, global investors discovering the continent’s capital markets, institutions seeking independent intelligence, governments and regulators watching market development, and Nigerians at home who deserve clear-eyed, honest analysis of the markets that shape their economy.

If Bloomberg built something for African capital markets, it would look something like this. We’re building it ourselves.
